Top Ten Things Making Me Happy Right Now

1. Tonight's sunset from my neighborhood:

2. Coming home after a long day to wet, sloppy kisses from a sweet, wiggly, overly-excited puppy
(this picture is clearly not doing a good job of demonstrating this, it was just the only one I had.)

3. Back on the bandwagon.  For the past month, maybe longer, I have been abusing my body: way too much drinking, way too much eating really crap food, way too much stress, way too little sleep, way too little exercise.  But I now have new resolve to get my shit together in that department, so today is day two of committed FitWit attendance and eating right.  Dinner tonight was a giant delicious salad that was about 50% avocado.  Yum.  :)  My muscles are also sore again, finally, which I secretly love.

4. The new Imagine Dragons album.

5. The cheapest and most self-restrained visit to Target I have ever made in my life: $6.42!

6. Keeping in touch the old-fashioned way:

8. More hilarious patient stories.  Today, in clinic:
Me, totally overwhelmed after listening to an incredible litany of medical issues going on with a Parkinson's patient: "And what would you say is your BIGGEST concern today?"
Parkinson's patient, totally deadpan, without missing a beat: "That Romney might get elected."
Swear, I do not make this stuff up.  I am not trying to be apolitical on this blog, but I'm also not trying to wave my opinions around or incite any sort of political discussions, either.  I am sure there are just as many snarky patient comments that go the other way every day, but these are just the ones I've heard personally.  And I think they are an absolute riot.  :)

9. A story I just heard from a friend who shall remain anonymous about how when she was in college she used to date the drummer of a band that has recently made it big and how she took his v-card.  And then he wrote a song about it.  And that song got him some sort of prestigious scholarship for some music school, or something like that.  This is probably funnier if you know the person and the band involved.  Sorry, I know this blog is usually a little more family-friendly, but for some reason this is just cracking me up right now.

10. This postcard from my sister:

Happy Wednesday!

Top Ten Signs You're on Surgery

10. Your shampoo ran out and you're washing your hair with the tiny travel bottles you found under the bathroom sink.

9. Your "lunch" is a Cliff Bar in a bathroom stall, eaten while you pee.

8. You can't remember the last time you wore clothing with buttons or zippers.

7. 9:30 pm is wayyy past your bedtime.

6. You are developing carpal tunnel syndrome from holding retractors for so long.

5. By the time you realize the attending was addressing you, he already assumes you're an idiot.

4. You get annoyed if you have to park all the way up on the second floor of the parking garage.

3. You have lecture from 8 am - 5 pm one day and wonder what to do with all your free time.

2. You fall asleep mid-sentence trying to tell your roommate about your day.

1. You keep getting texts from people saying things like, "Are you alive??"*

*Actually, this one is just a sign that you are in medical school.

Thursday Top Ten

1. My mason jar habit is getting out of control.  I can't really explain why, but I just love them.

(1a.) Now that the weather is warm enough for iced coffee, here is the best and easiest way to make it (and the reason I purchased even more mason jars recently): take your quart-sized mason jar. Add 5-6 T coffee grounds. Add water. Shake. Refrigerate overnight. Give the jar another little shake, and strain using a french press, or--the no-clean-up way--pour out through a coffee filter and toss the grounds. VoilĂ !

2. My favorite little study buddy.

3. There is a new tv show with AMANDA PEET in it??!?  I LOVE her!!!  And it's good!!  (But don't watch it if you are just going to judge my taste in television when you don't agree.)

4. My sister-in-law's sister-in-law has a blog... and she just had TWINS.  AND she is an actual photographer, so head over there if you want many more and much better pictures of something much cuter and more exciting than anything happening in my life these days.

5. Leftover chicken curry.

6. New soft happy-yellow purse from Target.

7. Izzy and her squeaky hippo.

8. The Wii I impulsively bought from Craigslist and Just Dance 3.  Jake set it up for me while I was out at boot camp tonight, and when I got home, I begged him to do "just one song" with me... after the first song, he challenged me to best out of three.  I now feel like this:

9. I now have to go whip up a Powerpoint presentation on insomnia for our didactics session tomorrow... it might will be a late night (How's that for irony? Actually, it might be a very effective teaching tool - I can demonstrate in real time the personal and professional consequences of not sleeping enough.)

10. This song.

Happy Thursday, everyone!
